Umvoti River drowning mars New Years Day

The teenager had been swimming with his friends in the river at Melville.

A New Year’s Day swim with friends turned into a tragedy when a teenage boy drowned in the Umvoti River today.

The body of the 15-year-old boy was recovered in the river near Melville, Stanger, earlier this afternoon.

Rescue teams, including the KwaDukuza fire department and lifeguards, worked together to find the body of the teenager.

“He got into difficulty and one of his friends tried holding onto him, but he could not save him,” said Dylan Meyrick of IPSS Medical Rescue.

A 14-year-old boy also drowned in a dam at a farm outside Stanger last Thursday.
