Family power the secret ingredient for KwaDukuza bakery’s success
Famous for their delicious snowballs, the cake shop has been doing business successfully for 18 years.
Located on 17B Lindley Street in KwaDukuza is one of the town’s favourite bakeries, Charmaine’s Novelty Cakes.
Famous for their delicious snowballs, the cake shop has been doing business successfully for 18 years, testament to the Lochran family’s dedication.
Owner and matriarch Charmaine said she began baking in her home, with her children helping out on weekends.
She later turned her passion into a reputable bakery specialising in biscuits, cupcakes and custom cakes for all occasions.
After completing matric, her daughter Reevashni Lochran-Naidoo joined her in the business and has been with her for the past 13 years.
“Working in the bakery brings balance to my life. I spend all day working with my parents and my sibling, and then I go home to my husband and child,” said Reevashni.
Charmaine said that working as a family had created a strong bond between them, which ensured success.
Head baker and son Kavish gave up his plan to become a traffic officer to also join the family business.
“I enrolled at the traffic officers’ training academy but decided to switch because I love baking and interacting with customers,” he said.
Although not a full-time worker at the bakery, husband and father Rajan plays his part by taking care of stock, deliveries and maintenance.
They have one employee, Nomsa Ngema, who has been a team-member for nine years and has become part of the family.
