Mandeni petrol bomb victim rejects ex-boyfriend’s R20 000 ‘peace offer’
She said she and her family were not interested in a peace offering and wanted the man to hand himself over to the police.
While efforts are underway to support the Mandeni woman who lost all her belongings when her ex-boyfriend allegedly petrol bombed her house, it is believed he has skipped the country and is back at his home in Eswatini.
Phumzile Khoza saw her seven-year-old nephew, Bayanda Ngiba, die in her arms after the fire in November and her daughter Ntombifuthi is still in hospital recovering from serious burn wounds.
She said her former boyfriend recently contacted her from his mother’s cellphone, offering R20 000 as a “peace offering”, which she rejected.
According to reports at the time, the man locked the door of her house with the children inside and set it alight. Khoza was not at home, sleeping at a friend’s house to avoid a confrontation with him after she had broken off their relationship. She had obtained a restraining order against him.

Left with nothing, Khoza is now trying to rebuild her life.
After the Courier reported on the incident last month, she was contacted by a few people offering help, including Ballito residents Yolanda Franklin and Kiara Padayachee of non-profit organisation Your Own Key Image (YOKI).
“We will be setting up a GoFundMe campaign to assist the family with counselling, taxi fares, educational funds and ongoing medical needs to diminish their challenges and improve their quality of life,” said Franklin.
She has a list of items needed by Khoza and her children. Some of the items include building materials, blankets and other household items.
