iLembe’s matric pass rate hits upward curve
District's 83.9% success rate shows significant increase compared to previous year.
The iLembe district rose to the challenge of former KZN premier Sihle Zikalala and obtained more than an 80% matric pass rate for 2022.
The district recorded a success rate of 83.9% when the results were released in Durban today, a significant rise from the 75.7% matric pass rate the previous year and 76.9% in 2020.
Zikalala last year challenged all districts to obtain at least an 80% pass rate, and most districts did.
Education MEC Mbali Frazer said after the province recorded a 76.8% pass rate in 2021, she was thrilled that KwaZulu-Natal has re-joined the league of other provinces that are in the 80% bracket.
“The class of 2022 has done us very proud by achieving an 83% pass rate. This means that out of the 164 308 pupils who wrote the exams, 136 388 passed. Our province continues to contribute the highest number of candidates who sit for and pass the National Senior Certificate examinations in the country,” said Frazer.
She said the number of schools that obtained a 100% pass rate also increased significantly, from 145 in 2021 to 212 last year..
“We were also able to reduce the number of schools that performed below 75% from 713 in 2021 to 435 in 2022.”
She said no school in this province registered a 0% pass rate.
The top performing pupil in the district was Azandizibusiso Mbonambi of Stanger Manor Secondary.
