Tongaat’s oldest church marks 100 years with restoration

The new year heralds a significant milestone for Christianity in Tongaat – the celebration of its first church’s centenary anniversary.

The former Roman Catholic church, built in 1923, is a historical landmark on High Street. It was the first church built in the town.

To mark the occasion, the AFM Tongaat Church has renovated the building and unveiled a new sign at the premises on New Year’s eve.

When it was constructed in 1923, the church also had an adjoining school which benefitted residents by meeting critical educational needs at the time.

In the early 1970s, the Catholic Church decided to build a new church in Maidstone.

The AFM Church in Tongaat at the time rented the premises as it was unable to afford and own its own property.

“In 1979, the church council and I, with just R2.23 in our bank account – and by faith – bid for the church at a cost of R40 000,’ said Pastor Ronnie Naidoo of the AFM Tongaat Church.

“The role players were the Boulle family and the late Archbishop Dennis Hurley and the church building was eventually acquired.

“This is a milestone as Christianity is 100 years old in Tongaat. The building is a memorial and historical monument,’ said Pastor Naidoo.

Congregants of the church from the early days are requested to contact the AFM church office on 032 944 6364.

The public is welcome to visit the building and can book an appointment. It is also available for chapel weddings and small funerals.
