iLembe’s top matric achiever to study medicine

While he was determined to do well, never in his wildest dreams did Azandizibusiso Mbonambi think he was going to be iLembe district’s top matric achiever.

The Stanger Manor Secondary School matriculant bagged seven distinctions, obtaining 95% for IsiZulu first additional language, 96% for mathematics, 100% in accounting, 90% for life science, 95% for physics and 81% for English home language.

The young man from Gledhow is going to pursue studies in medicine at the University of Cape Town, but is currently waiting for a bursary.

“In December 2021 I got Covid and was hospitalised. Watching doctors and nurses at KwaDukuza Private Hospital treating me motivated me to become a doctor,” said Mbonambi.

He praised his family and teachers for the support they provided.

“My mother and brother were there for me. I was not even washing dishes, because all that was important was my studying and getting the best results. I also want to thank the teachers and Protec KwaDukuza for extra lessons. Those classes played a huge role in getting me top results.”

His advice to this year’s matriculants is that they should learn to understand things and not only memorise to pass their exams.

“If you understand the topic or subject, it becomes easier to apply what you have learnt no matter how you are asked the question,” he said.

The second position in the district was taken by Siphokazi Gumede of Qinisani High School, third was Njabulo Mthethwa of Nombika Secondary School, fourth Luyanda Gcwabaza of Mbekaphansi High School and fifth Nontobeko Ngcobo of Qalakahle High School.
