Ballito dressmaker strives for uniqueness
From as young as seven, Rose Ngalo had surprised her mother with the ease with which she took up the skill of dressmaking simply by watching her work.
Ballito’s well-known dressmaker and alteration lady, Rose Ngalo, is determined to be the queen of elegance.
She officially launched her clothing label Rose Ngalo Design (RND) at her shop located at The Crest business park on Saturday.
“We are going to produce a limited edition clothing line to give our customers a unique look. While we specialise in women’s clothes, we are planning to introduce men’s clothing soon,” said Ngalo.
The 45-year-old mother of one comes from humble beginnings and became a domestic worker after dropping out of school.
The Bloemfontein-born dressmaker said she had dropped out at the age of 15 to start earning her own keep.
She had learned how to make dresses from her mother, Maphoka.
From as young as seven, she surprised her mother with the ease with which she took up the new skill, just by watching her at work.
While working as a domestic worker in Johannesburg, she used her spare time to sew clothes and her employers were impressed. They gave her a sewing machine and her side hustle was able to take off.
“I am currently supplying different clothing stores, but I feel it is time to grow and get my brand shining. I will continue supplying those stores, but I want to cater for those who want to be unique,” said Ngalo.
