Ntshawini a hotbed of crime, police say
A lack of trust in police has seen residents become reluctant to provide critical information which could lead to the arrest of criminals.
Statistics suggest Ntshawini is a leading crime hotspot in KwaDukuza.
While the figures were not presented to the KwaDukuza Community Policing Forum’s annual general meeting in the KwaDukuza town hall last Wednesday, a police diagram supported the argument.
The chart indicated that Ntshawini had the most reported cases in terms of assault with grievous bodily harm, armed robbery, murder and attempted murder, among others.
KwaDukuza head of detectives, colonel Bongani Mazibuko, said while identifying main crime spots was imperative, the arrest rate was disappointing.
“This is due to the reluctance of residents to share critical information, which makes our job difficult. I understand there is a lack of trust between police and community members, but they can always give information to the station’s management. By doing so their safety can be guaranteed,” said Mazibuko.
He said another problem Saps faced was witnesses not arriving at court, and victims settling with perpetrators out of court without informing the police.
KwaDukuza station commander, brigadier Sbongile Mhlongo, emphasised the importance of all KwaDukuza stakeholders working together to combat crime.
“The criminals we are fighting against work together, so we can never win if there is no unity among ourselves. I truly believe that KwaDukuza can be a crime-free area, but it is not only up to the police to deal with crime. Every single resident has a role to play,” said Mhlongo.
