KwaDukuza residents “gatvol” with loadshedding
Newly appointed interim committee chairperson, Walter Schotter, said the affected areas, especially Ballito and KwaDukuza town, went without power for up to 60 hours a week.
KwaDukuza residents are planning to hand over a memorandum to mayor Lindi Nhaca next Monday over what they see as the unfair distribution of rolling blackouts within the municipality.
In anticipation, Nhaca announced last Thursday via her Facebook page, her intention to meet with Eskom to investigate possible solutions.
“This engagement will look at how we turn the tide on the impact of loadshedding that is affecting local businesses, the alleged biased distribution of loadshedding and a lot more,” she wrote.
Speaking at a public meeting at the KwaDukuza People’s Park on Saturday, newly appointed interim committee chairperson, Walter Schotter, said the affected areas, especially Ballito and KwaDukuza town, were without power for up to 60 hours a week.
They will ask that the municipal electricity department provide a detailed breakdown of the northern and southern grid infrastructure and how it was controlled.
“We want to know at what point Eskom is feeding into our grid and at what point the grid is the responsibility of KwaDukuza municipality (KDM). We want an open, transparent dialogue. If there are matters that impede KDM’s ability to manage and operate our networks, we are willing to look into them and see in what way we can assist. All we ask for is fairness,” said Schotter.
He claimed that one third of the municipality was bearing the entire load of loadshedding.
“This is unacceptable. We want the mayor to intervene urgently so that an equitable solution can be found,” he said.
The group also insist that eThekwini Metro share the burden once again, as almost a year has past since the floods.
“If the load was shared more evenly, it would be a great relief,” said Schotter.
