A new chapter in opulent living

It was anticipated that the Lakes development would create 3 500 permanent jobs once completed, with about 40 000 direct and indirect job opportunities during the development and construction phases.

Just over four years since breaking ground at the R10-billion Zimbali Lakes Resort, some of the first homes are now taking shape, already an expression of the opulent lifestyle the pet-friendly estate will offer.

The plan is to create a self-contained community from where one would almost never need to leave.

iLembe Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Tourism CEO Cobus Oelofse said the economic benefit of the resort, and specifically the Tatali Precinct, would be significant for the North Coast.

“Estates, generally speaking, have established themselves as micro economic hubs into which hundreds, if not thousands, of businesses and employees commute to on a daily basis. I believe this will again be the case, but with more varied and exclusive economic opportunities being created,” Oelofse said.

The resort will include an 18-hole golf course designed by Gary Player, the Beach Club, Ocean Club, The Boulevard, Water Club and Sports Club, as well as the exclusive Tatali Precinct.

Tatali Precinct, meaning cascades in Arabic, will include a limited selection of properties such as 22 Sky apartments plus a further 20 mansions, which range from R12.5-million to as high as R350-million.

This will make Tatali home to quite possibly the most expensive property in South Africa, with the Oculus mansion being heralded as its most exclusive offering.

A high net worth survey conducted by Zimbali Lakes found that only 21 people in the country could possibly afford the Oculus.

With its limited selection of properties, offers to purchase mansions in the Tatali Precinct will be by invitation only.

As things stand, 15 homes are currently under construction at Zimbali Lakes, with 70 home plans under review with the Lakes’ design committee.

Once complete, the Lakes will have 350 sectional title homes, as well as other amenities.

Tatali comprises ten independent sites, including a hotel, residential area, retail outlets and offices. The concept is developed around the featured public park and waterfront linked by a stepped piazza – designed like a high street with shops and cafés.

Senior vice president of operations Wayne Krambeck said: “The idea is not to make this stand out for the European market but rather have it accessible and affordable to the greater North Coast region.”

Krambeck said Tatali’s commercial aspect would not fall within the gated estate and would be accessible to the general public for entertainment, shopping and other activities.

“Why the Western Cape when we have so much more value for your buck? It’s because nobody until now has created a product to compete with the Western Cape,” Krambeck said.

Zimbali Lakes Resort is situated between the Tongaat River and Ballito and is projected to be complete by the end of 2025.
