The art of flower arrangement with the Roses
During the flower arranging session with Rose Stone and Rose Heenan, it was heard that the club celebrated the milestone achievement of the most members in its history.
The Umhlali District Garden and Flower Club members were delighted with a tutorial from two seasoned flower arrangers at All Souls Anglican Church last week, Wednesday.
Rose Stone and Rose Heenan captivated guests during their flower arrangement session, highlighting key factors to keep in mind when arranging.
The club also celebrated a milestone after reaching 106 members.
Heenan advised when trimming flowers for arranging, one should always make stem cuts under water as this increases the lifespan of flowers and plants, delaying the decaying process.
A seasoned garden show displayer and arranger for weddings and functions, she said she was horrified when approached to speak, as she had never arranged flowers in front of an audience.
She also shared advice given to her by the late Rosemary Ladlau, who believed one should always leave room for the butterflies and avoid bunching up flowers in an arrangement.
Ladlau was an eminent South African flower arranger who died at her Simbithi home in 2021, a month before her 95th birthday.
She had become an international celebrity in the flower arranging universe.
Heenan said one should also avoid neglecting the back of an arrangement.
Taking to the stage, Stone brought humour while sorting her arrangement.
Reminiscing about a wedding she had arranged flowers for, which took an entire day, she returned the next day before the wedding to mist the flowers to keep them fresh.
But “a little old cleaning lady” had beaten her to the punch and had removed all of the flowers aside from those at the entrance of the venue.
“Dumped on a heap, the cleaning lady said she wondered why the flowers were so fresh,” Stone said.
With only three hours left, she and a teammate frantically jumped into action to save the day and put the last finishing touches to their arrangements as guests arrived at the door.
“Nobody noticed a thing,” Stone said.
