Join the Tongaat safe house legacy
One of the fundraising initiatives to hopefully help bring more financial stability is the introduction of the Pure Heart Safe House Legacy Project.
The Tongaat Child and Family Welfare Society’s Pure Hearts safe house for vulnerable children is almost ready to open its doors.
Already fully furnished, it is hoped to have its first intake of children later this month once health and safety approval has been granted.
The facility provides a provisional protective, nurturing and supportive environment for abandoned, abused and neglected children until they can be reunited with their families or integrated into the community.
Six children, from newborns to 18 year old’s, can be accommodated at any given time. As with all welfare organisations, funding to secure longevity of such critical projects remains a challenge.
According to the society’s social work and general manager, Jo Moodley, it costs between R2 000 and R3 500 per month, per placement, depending on age and immediate needs.
The running costs to keep the safe house operational comes to R16 800 per month, or R201 600 per year.
Moodley said because the society’s donor base is still not stable at this point, it will be faced with shortfalls which will have to be overcome somehow to ensure sustainability.

Donors of R1 200 or more can engrave a message of hope on a plaque to the children on a legacy wall under their names or those of loved ones, family or friends.
The donation can be made as a once off payment, R100 contributions over 12 months or two R600 payments.
