Trust invests R250-million in philanthropic programmes
The trust has rebuilt many schools and assisted non-profit organisations across the province.
A glamorous gala was held in celebration of the Isibaya Community Trust’s R250-million philanthropic initiatives last Friday.
The chairman of the trust, Vivian Reddy, presented a new book on the Sibaya Community Trust’s work, dedicated to the late Zulu monarch, King Goodwill Zwelithini.
Speaking at the Sibaya Casino Imbizo Conference Centre, Reddy said the late king played an important role in many of the organisation’s projects, was consulted on the direction of the organisation, and was launched by him.
“He told me about the plight of the impoverished children, HIV/Aids, and that education must be one of our priorities. He was also concerned about poor children from rural areas not having access to critical corrective heart surgery. To this end, our contribution to the Children Cardiac Foundation of South Africa in honour of our late king saved the lives of 90 children,” said Reddy.
The book describes the trust’s philanthropic role in the province. Projects included the Chief Albert Luthuli Skills Centre, built in KwaDukuza.
The centre offers courses such as welding, bricklaying, electrical work, and plumbing. Reddy said the centre had now trained more than 3 000 students.
“I remember when I was approached by a young man at one of the malls, and he said, “Mr Reddy, I came to say thank you. I asked what are you thanking me for, and he said I am one of the students who was trained at the skills centre in KwaDukuza. Today, I run my own welding company and have employed other young people,” said Reddy.
The trust has rebuilt many schools and assisted non-profit organisations across the province.
Social development minister Lindiwe Zulu thanked the trust for its work in helping the underprivileged.
“I hope that what we saw today will stay in our hearts and minds and encourage us to do more. To the young people, know that education will liberate you, and it will give us other Vivian Reddys for the future,” said Zulu.
