The groups had a chance to learn basic techniques and take their pieces home to frame.
A chance for aspiring painters young and old to learn the craft, the Mommy & Me art class drew strong support at the weekend.
Hosted by Minette Schmidt (Minette’s Art) and Monique Baard at Simbithi Country Club’s Firefly Conference Room on Saturday, the groups had a chance to learn basic techniques and take their pieces home to frame.
As the Mommy & Me event had children involved, the painters had freedom to create, although Schmidt did provide a reference picture from which to draw inspiration.
“We typically have less structured sessions when there’s kids because we want them to really follow their own ideas.
“Our other popular event is a wine and painting pairing, which is more structured so adults can paint in tandem with the instructor,” said Schmidt.
Originally from Pretoria, Schmidt moved to KwaZulu-Natal last year and hosts around seven events a month around the province.
A commission artist, Schmidt is skilled in a variety of mediums and discovered a love for sharing that talent too.
“In Gauteng there are plenty of these types of events, but there didn’t seem to be that many here. So we saw a gap and it has been a perfect fit,” she said.
She is typically in Ballito once a month and changes venues often so that regulars get new experiences each time.
Pregnant with twins, Schmidt will temporarily hand the classes over to Baard during her upcoming maternity leave.
