Young men in Tongaat take charge to keep youth off streets through sport
They are transforming a vacant plot of land into a sport facility with the goal of keeping local youth engaged in healthy activities.
A group of young men in Emona, Tongaat, are on a mission to activate sport in their area with the intention of keeping the youth off the streets.
Sandile Khumalo, who works at the construction site of the Emona reservoir as a community liaison officer, said he saw an opportunity to appeal for support from the different construction companies working at the site.
“Our councillor and tribal authority gave us permission to use a vacant plot of land on which to build a sport field. One of the construction companies helped clear the space and it is now a matter of finding additional resources we might need to turn this location into a suitable sports facility,” said Khumalo.
The 34-year-old grew up in Emona and said he saw many young people throwing their lives away.
He realised the youth in their community had nowhere to play sport or engage in healthy recreational activities.
He said the sport field would also be used for hosting public meetings and cultural events.
