Shaka’s Head residents experience prolonged blackouts because of illegal connections
Homeowners are putting the blame on residents of a nearby information settlement.
A handful of Shaka’s Head households are experiencing a prolonged electricity blackout because of illegal connections and damaged power lines.
Residents say the issue was reported to KwaDukuza municipality, but the blackout continues, now for more than two weeks.
The situation is particularly challenging for households with children who require electricity for studying purposes and for preparing meals.
None of the affected residents can afford alternative sources of energy such as generators or solar panels to temporarily alleviate the crisis.
One of the residents, who asked to remain anonymous, said the informal settlement next to the township was the source of the problem.
“People illegally connect electricity and when they damage the lines, we are left with no electricity. The matter has been reported countless times, and we have not received any response.”
The mother of one said that before the current blackouts they also experienced an eight-day blackout period. Supply was restored on Saturday, April 8, but went down again the next day.
“We do not know how we can be helped or by whom, because the municipality is failing us,” she said.
KwaDukuza municipality has not responded by the time of going to print.
