Etete youth desk hosts career expo to tackle high unemployment rate
Young girls were urged to pursue careers in male-dominated fields and to reject the notion that their past should determine their future.
The growing number of unemployed graduates and overall high unemployment rate locally is one of the chief concerns of the Etete youth desk.
The youth desk hosted a career expo last Wednesday at the Etete community hall to expose school pupils to career opportunities and assist them to choose subjects wisely.
Sixty-five pupils from Nonhlevu, Snenhlanhla Secondary, Groutville High School and North Coast Agricultural College took the opportunity to learn about careers in demand and how to successfully work towards their careers of choice.
The youth desk encouraged young girls not to shy away from traditionally male dominated careers and more specifically, to not allow their backgrounds to define their future.
Etete youth desk chairperson, Slindile Khanyile, said it was common for pupils to be told that mathematics and science were difficult subjects, and as a result most pupils avoided them. Yet these subjects were deal-breakers for many in-demand careers.
“We have too many young people who have studied but are struggling to find employment. Others drop out of school due to lack of interest. To combat this we brought in professionals from different fields who motivated the kids and explained what subjects they should choose if they want to pursue those careers,” said Khanyile.
A youth desk is a municipal structure that falls within the ward system, with the purpose of encouraging the youth to participate in local government.
