New refuse survey ordered in light of outcry
A domestic worker living on one's property does not constitute a second household for waste collection purposes.
A second round of waste disposal surveys has been ordered by the KwaDukuza municipality (KDM) after a widespread outcry against unexpected refuse collection hikes last month.
Households across KwaDukuza saw rates increases last month after the municipality undertook an eight-month survey to properly establish household living arrangements.
Some residents saw a surprise increase of between R1 748 to R3 496 on their monthly rates bill.
The municipality had previously circulated that they would undertake a survey, but residents reported being blindsided by the steep increases.
Per the Dolphin Coast Residents and Ratepayers Association (Docrra), who last week received feedback on their query regarding the rates, around 600 households reported increases.
More than 200 households objected and it has been enough for the municipality and Dolphin Coast Waste Management – who is contracted for waste collection in KwaDukuza – to order another survey.
“About 180 properties will have the charges removed from the April bill, but no reversal charges will be considered unless resident has lodged an objection,” said Docrra vice-chairman Brian Botes.
To submit an objection, you will need to email shireenl@kwadukuza.gov.za, after which further investigation will be done by the municipality.
