Fisherman’s body found after extensive two-day search at Tugela River
After a two-day search, a missing fisherman's body was found downriver and successfully retrieved with the help of a helicopter.
Search and recovery efforts continued today (Thursday) for a fisherman who drowned in the Tugela River on Tuesday afternoon.
Following an extensive two-day search, residents of the area spotted the 27-year-old man’s body downriver, about 300m from where he had been fishing.
IPSS Medical Rescue’s Samantha Meyrick said after a long hike, the body was accessed by a group comprising IPSS Search and Rescue members, Sundumbili and Richards Bay Saps K9 Search and Rescue, and KDM lifeguards.
“The body was successfully retrieved with the assistance of Prem Balram from Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), who used their helicopter to relocate the body and airlift Search and Rescue and Saps members back to the main road, saving them from a 4 to 5-hour hike,” Meyrick said.
Additionally, RUSA security and police provided protection from potential crocodiles in the area, with the body recovered without encountering any crocodiles.
