Shoplifting spike prompts hardline response

Supermarkets and chain stores have been worst hit, with theft becoming a daily occurrence.

Police are taking a hard line to combat a recent increase in shoplifting cases.

According to Umhlali Saps spokesperson, Captain Vinny Pillay, there have been a spate of incidents recently which have prompted tighter control.

Supermarkets and chain stores have been worst hit, with theft becoming a daily occurrence.

“The community should know that shoplifting is treated seriously. It takes a long time to process a shoplifter so we are enforcing stronger restrictions to avoid repeat offenders,” said Pillay.

Regardless of the rand value of the theft, one’s fingerprints will be taken and it will be treated as a criminal case in court.

“We will also not grant bail. Shoplifters think it is not a serious crime and they will be let off with a fine or bail, but that is no longer the case.”
