Salt Rock school urgently needs new home
Due to South African law prohibiting educational facilities from operating within a 500m circumference of establishments with liquor licences, the school will be required to start the upcoming term on July 18 at another location.
Gamechangers Primary School in Umhlali is urgently looking for a new home as regulatory requirements are forcing them to relocate sooner than planned.
Co-founder, Phillip Bowyer, said the school had been growing since its inception three years ago and had planned to relocate at the end of the year, but that these plans have been forced forward.
“We have always been very grateful to Freedom House Church and the landlords to be able to use the current premises, but we knew we would have to move to a larger venue. With some of the dining establishments at Burnedale obtaining liquor licences, the school has now been compelled to relocate sooner than anticipated,” said Bowyer.
According to South African law, educational facilities are not allowed to operate within 500m of establishments holding a liquor licence. This means the school must begin the next term on July 18 at a different location.
“We founded the school because of our passion to make a difference in one of the most unequal educational systems in the world. It’s hard to believe that today we have 50 children from different socio-economic backgrounds learning from one another and growing together,” said co-founder and principal, Rachel Bowyer.
The school introduced a unique sliding fee structure, where like-minded families who earn more agree to pay more than those who earn less.
This gives people from diverse backgrounds the same opportunity to access high quality education.
“We have been looking to lease or buy a property over the last 12 months, but have not been able to find the right fit. We therefore appeal to anyone in the community that may know of a suitable venue to rent or buy to please contact us,” said Phillip.
To cover the immediate need, the school needs a facility of around 250m2 under roof, with another area of the same size or larger outdoors that the children can use during breakaway learning times and breaks.
The outdoor focus of the school makes a secure smallholding or easily accessible farm within 10 minutes from Ballito or Salt Rock ideal.
