Death toll from multi-truck collision at Zinkwazi reaches three
The N2 at the Zinkwazi-Darnall bridge has since been reopened to traffic.
The death toll in this morning’s three-truck accident on the N2 at the Zinkwazi-Darnall bridge has risen to three after a third body was discovered.
Initially, it was reported that two people had lost their lives in the crash, but IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson Samantha Meyrick said a third body was subsequently discovered during clean-up operations at the scene.
All three deceased were seated on the trailer of one of the trucks involved.
This morning a truck collided with the rear of a smaller truck and trailer, which plunged down an embankment.
After the impact, the larger truck swerved into oncoming traffic, resulting in a head-on collision with a third truck.
Information from the scene indicates that the fatalities included two women and a man.
Emergency responders attended to the scene promptly, with firefighters extricating some injured from the wreckage of one of the trucks.
The injured were transported to hospital, while the driver of one of the trucks had to be airlifted.
Looting of the liquor truck occurred soon after the accident, adding further challenges to the rescue efforts, said Meyrick.
The N2 has since been reopened.
