Road built to power improved water supply from Mvotshane Dam at Maphumulo
With the South African National Defence Force unable to assist, a road had to be constructed to bring in a 10-ton generator.
The road leading to Mvotshane Dam in Maphumulo had to be rebuilt recently to move in a 10-ton generator to the dam to improve water supply in the area.
The generator will ensure continuous raw water supply from the dam to the Maphumulo water treatment plant during loadshedding or unplanned power failures.
Visiting the site, iLembe District Municipality mayor Thobani Shandu said bulk supplier Umgeni Water had been trying since last September to transport the generator, even going as far as engaging the South African National Defence Force to possibly assist with a helicopter.
“Due to the generator’s size, the SANDF was unable to assist and eventually a tarred road had to be constructed,” said Shandu.
