Spark of Joy launches in Mandeni
In August last year, Spark of Joy began feeding elderly community members who were forced to wait in long lines at their pension payout point in Sundumbili, near Mandeni.
The Spark of Joy non-profit organisation continues to ensure that the elderly community of Mandeni is not forgotten.
Initially founded by Robert and Khethiwe Watson from abroad in England in 2015, the organisation had its official local launch in Mandeni last month.
The Watsons had sent donations of everything from clothes, toys and tools to medical equipment such as wheelchairs over the past eight years but have since created more regular outreach initiatives after returning to live in the town last year.
In August last year, Spark of Joy began feeding elderly community members who were forced to wait in long lines at their pension payout point in Sundumbili, near Mandeni.
“Some of these mkhulus and gogos sleep outside in the cold on an empty stomach, waiting for their pension as food at home is finished before month end. We just want to give them something to help them gain strength before they start their shopping,” said Khethiwe.
A monthly donation of 100 loaves of bread, 10kg of sugar, 15 litres of milk, margarine, teabags and more from Renckens SUPERSPAR has allowed for a consistent feeding scheme on payout day.
“SPAR opened its doors to Spark of Joy without hesitation and we are thankful to God for them. We still need help as by 10am we are out of stock. At least those who come at 5am and those who sleep outside get something to eat,” she said.
The food is prepared and handed out by volunteers and is gratefully received by those in line who had sometimes not eaten in days.
As a next step, the Watsons are fundraising to create a care centre that could provide daily help.
“Spark Of Joy is looking to develop the elderly holistically and we want to build a centre where they can come and relax, socialise with their peers, have a bite to eat and then go home. We also want to go to those who have nobody at home. We want to bring all services to them – grooming services, cleaning their house and yard, cooking them a warm meal, as well as leave them with some groceries to keep them going to prevent their pension being used only to buy food. They must enjoy their pension,” said Khethiwe.
