Cultural show draws massive local support

The Life is a Tamasha show recently drew huge local support across two sellout performances at Sibaya Casino.

Written and produced by Tongaat’s Kamal Maharaj, the annual show is performed primarily by school-aged children from Tongaat, La Mercy, Seatides, Verulam and Phoenix.

Although there is a new script and music every year, the intention remains the same, to give students a chance to perform on a prestigious stage and have something to fill their school holidays.

“The entire cast spent a nine-day yoga camp together at Sunfield Home School before the show, during which time we rehearsed and bonded as a group. There are so many vices available for children when not at school and we try to provide a positive outlet over the holidays. It is always amazing to see how quickly they forget about their devices when together as a group and doing activities,” said Maharaj.

The show has become well-known throughout the North Coast but also countrywide, with some of the older cast taking time off work to travel from Johannesburg to be involved.

A few local university students were included too.

“Tamasha is a colloquial word which means fun, but a little bit crazy. The play was about how life can be messed up at times, but also that there is so much fun to be had,” he said.

Life is a Tamasha was mostly a musical, drawing classic songs from Bollywood and Hollywood while including high energy and colourful dance numbers.

The support was so large that Sibaya added an extra hundred seats for both performances just to accommodate the crowd.
