Water supply interruptions on North Coast to last until Thursday evening

In a bid to enhance the reliability and performance of the Hazelmere water treatment works, uMngeni-uThukela Water, formerly known as Umgeni Water, is undertaking essential maintenance work on the Avondale pumps.

The aim is to improve water supply system by installing a new delivery manifold. However, the intricacy of the task demands a temporary shutdown of the Avondale station.

Maintenance work began this morning at 10am and is expected to be completed by 6pm on Thursday, July 27, with a total of 80 hours allocated for the project.

During this time, artisans will replace the existing manifold, ensuring that it operates optimally and contributes to an improved water supply.

To prepare for the installation, the Avondale pumps will be isolated and the water pipeline that feeds the Avondale reservoir will be thoroughly cleaned.

While this crucial maintenance takes place, the La Mercy pumps will be deployed to supply water to the Avondale reservoir, mitigating the impact of the shutdown.

However, it is important to note that there may be a reduction in the volume of drinking water supplied by uMngeni-uThukela Water during this period.

As a result, residents in certain areas might experience intermittent water supply or lower water pressure.

The affected regions include:
Zimbali
Ballito
Chaka’s Rock
Salt Rock
Sheffield Beach
Foxhill
Umhlali
Shakaskraal
Etete
Nkobongo
Shayamoya
Shaka’s Head
Tinley Manor

Residents who receive water from the Honolulu reservoir, on the other hand, need not be concerned as this reservoir will continue to be supplied from the Lower Thukela Bulk Water Supply Scheme in Mandini.
