#Obituary: Mandolin Man’s magic no more

In the heart of Ballito lived a cherished soul known far and wide as the Mandolin Man.

Ron Parkes (85), the man behind delivering musical magic, sadly passed away on July 19, leaving the North Coast with many memories as sweet as the notes that danced from his beloved instrument.

A brief, yet courageous battle with cancer claimed his life.

In the quaint corners of Salt Rock Hotel or the vibrant hubbub of The Market at Ballito Lifestyle Centre, Ron wove enchantment through his mandolin’s strings, captivating all who had the privilege to witness his performances.

But Ron’s journey to musical mastery took a fascinating detour.

Once a skilled boat builder he delved into the world of furnishing yachts.

Destiny had another tune in store for him however, and around four decades ago fate placed a mandolin in his hands.

From that moment on, he fully embraced his new vocation, finding solace in the tunes he played and bringing joy to the locals.

Over the years, Ron became a true North Coast treasure affectionately known as the Mandolin Man.

Tragedy cast its shadow over his life however when he received the crushing news of squamous cell carcinoma about seven months ago.

Time and money stood as formidable barriers, impeding immediate treatment.

Determined friends rallied together, desperately trying to raise funds for the man who had gifted them so much musical delight.

Alas, fate chose a different ending to this chapter, and Ron’s songs fell silent before the desired goal could be reached.

“He fought a hard battle with cancer, but unfortunately lost the fight,” said friend Barry Bowditch.

Ron’s legacy continues through the love he shared with his cherished wife, Marie, and their five children.
