Beach litter busters get to work
The Adopt a Beach campaign will be held every last Sunday of the month, with another clean-up planned for Salmon Bay on August 27.
KZN-based non-profit organisation Adopt a River on Sunday last weekend launched its first Adopt a Beach campaign at Salmon Bay in Ballito, where 51 people showed up to support beach clean-up efforts.
Volunteers collected about 75kg of waste.
Adopt a River director, Janet Simpkins, said they were surprised by the volume since the beach appeared clean when they arrived.
“We have been overwhelmed by the support of the community at our launch in Ballito,” she said.
Adopt a River focuses on community-based solutions to issues around river health, specifically pollution.
Simpkins extended special thanks to sponsors and the local organising committee, including the KwaDukuza Municipality, for disposing of the waste collected.
