Nurturing women empowerment and identity

Women’s Month is more than just a square on the calendar.

It embodies a global movement towards gender equality, recognition and empowerment.

It serves as a reminder of historical achievements and contributions made by women across various domains, highlighting their pivotal role in shaping societies and driving progress.

Celebrating these accomplishments not only sparks inspiration for future generations but also prompts reflection on ongoing gender disparities.

By challenging stereotypes and breaking down barriers, Women’s Month encourages women to pursue their passions unabashedly.

So believes Salt Rock resident, former Mrs South Africa finalist and Durban assistant priest, Buli Sihlali-Woolley.

Sihlali-Wooley said Women’s Month goes beyond women’s rights by embracing intersectionality, acknowledging the unique challenges faced by diverse groups of women.

“This approach fosters empathy and compassion, creating an atmosphere of mutual respect and understanding. It becomes a catalyst for advocacy and practical steps towards achieving gender equality. Gender equality, fundamentally a human rights issue, enriches all aspects of society, from economic progress to community strengthening and global harmony,” she said.

An avid agent for change, she said empowering young girls was critical in seeing them nurture their true selves with pride and confidence.

This sense of identity enables them to make a meaningful impact on society, while also recognising and embracing their unique strengths and abilities.

“Teaching young girls to overcome self-doubt, make informed decisions, express themselves and cultivate emotional intelligence equips them with essential life skills. This empowerment enables them to adapt to challenges and opportunities, shaping a future where all women can flourish.”

This focus on identity is at the heart of several current projects supported by Sihlali-Woolley.

The Sister to Sister mentorship programme offers guidance and support, fostering personal growth and purpose-driven lives.

Canvas for Her celebrates the journey of identity, encouraging personal development and self-discovery.

“Uplifting young girls and women is vital for achieving social justice and human rights. It rectifies historical and systemic inequalities, positively transforming communities. Despite progress, challenges such as underrepresentation in leadership, gender-based violence and educational barriers persist. Continued attention, advocacy and efforts are crucial to ensure sustained empowerment,” she said.

At the time of writing, Sihlali-Wooley had arrived in Cambodia as part of a missionary project under Sharing of Ministries Abroad Southern Africa (SOMA), which focuses on education as a foundation for empowerment.

She said they would focus on mentorship, English training and leadership development, the goal of which is to equip women in the country with the necessary tools to overcome societal barriers.

As a female pastor, her commitment extends to empowering women and emerging leaders within and outside the church. “The goal is to nurture gifts and skills, cultivating capable leaders.”

Women’s Month is not just a celebration; it’s a testament to the ongoing journey towards gender equality and empowerment, believes Sihlali-Wooley.
