Domestic job seekers still scammed
Head of the X-ray department, Dr Vimul Valabjee, said he was concerned that more domestic workers had fallen victim to the scam after 'reporting for duty' over the past few weeks.
Desperate for work, domestic workers seeking employment continue to fall victim to a scam extorting funds for uniforms and jobs that never materialise.
The Courier previously reported on the issue, highlighting that several unemployed North Coast domestics were contacted by bogus employers who promised them jobs after they submitted R550 deposits.
Domestics who spoke to the Courier at the time said scamsters told them to present their payment receipt at the independently-run X-ray department of Netcare Alberlito, where they would work as cleaners.
Head of the X-ray department, Dr Vimul Valabjee, said he was concerned that more domestic workers had fallen victim to the scam after ‘reporting for duty’ over the past few weeks.
“We advised the victims they had been scammed when they presented themselves at our department,” he said, adding that not only did the department not have any cleaning positions vacant, but that they and the hospital would not ask applicants to pay for a job.
Dr Valabjee urged the scam victims to report the matter to police and advised jobseekers to verify the authenticity of any job offer before paying any money.
