New haven for rape and abuse victims comes to Shaka’s Head
With the support of local businesses, foundation founder Busisiwe Makhathini joined forces with other young women in the community to create a safe location for survivors.
The Sakhisizwe Warriors Foundation has reached a significant milestone by opening a trauma centre for victims of rape and abuse in Shaka’s Head.
A two-year journey from inception to realisation, the initiative was spearheaded by the foundation’s dedicated chairperson, Busisiwe Makhathini.
Her inspiration for the project stemmed from her observation of victims hesitant to seek counselling, not because they didn’t want to, but because they lacked the means to travel to counselling sessions.
With the support of local businesses, Makhathini joined forces with other young women in the community, Mabongi Mthethwa, Mandisa Khumalo and Samkelisiwe Mbatha, to create a safe location for survivors.
This was achieved by acquiring a shipping container which they transformed into a workable trauma centre.
“We were fortunate to connect with a dedicated, trained counsellor who generously offers her services for free. Other counsellors and social workers can also use our centre to meet their patients, especially those who face financial constraints,” said Makhathini.
According to her they record about 10 new cases each month related to rape or gender-based violence.
The trauma centre will be operational from 10am to 3pm on Mondays to Fridays. Only emergency cases will be attended to on weekends.
