Zulu King names new amabutho commanders at Umkhosi weLembe
The king acknowledged Mangosuthu Buthelezi's pivotal role in the royal family, describing how he had mentored him on the duties and responsibilities of being a king.
Zulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini on Saturday appointed new commanders for the amabutho (regiments), Prince Vanana Zulu and Sipho Mhlongo.
He made the announcement during the annual Umkhosi weLembe event at the Stanger High School grounds on Saturday.
Usually held on King Shaka Day, now called Heritage Day, this year’s event was hosted a day before, which also happened to be the king’s birthday.
These appointments came following the passing of the previous amabutho commander, Zihogo “Mgilija” Nhleko, in November 2021. King Misuzulu explained that because of the size of the amabutho, he decided two commanders would be more appropriate.
This year’s Umkhosi weLembe was significant as it was the first to be hosted after the recent death of Zulu Prime Minister, Chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi.
The king acknowledged Buthelezi’s pivotal role in the royal family, describing how he had mentored him on the duties and responsibilities of being a king.
He indicated that the new prime minister would be announced after the mourning period. He also made a plea for peace and unity within the royal family.
It is worth noting that a court case initiated by King Misuzulu’s older brother, Prince Simakade, who is claiming the throne, is still pending. This division has led to Prince Simakade being recognised as king by his faction within the royal family.
Speaking on social matters, King Misuzulu expressed his deep concern about the high incidence of abuse against women and children.
“We are ranked as the number one perpetrators of abuse against women. It does not sit well with me; please stop it. It is wrong and tarnishing our image as men and the Zulu nation.” At the conclusion of his speech, emotions were stirred as he requested Queen Ntokozo Mayisela to grace the occasion by singing a happy birthday song for him, which she did with her angelic voice.
