Help needed to solve Umhlali Post Office water woes

The Umhlali Post Office has been without water for five months as a result of the state-owned entity’s continued battle with excessive debt issues countrywide.

Government has already committed more than

R6.2-billion in bailouts to the Post Office this year, on top of a cumulative debt of R8-billion.

With the Post Office currently in business rescue, efforts are being made locally to help solve the Umhlali Post Office’s water supply issues.

Salt Rock ward councillor Privi Makhan said she had approached Siza Water on the matter with the hope of having interest on the Umhlali Post Office’s account written off.

But the outstanding amount of R5 705.93 still needs paying.

“Entities such as Umhlali Post Office go out of their way to ensure services remain running,” she said.

With no running water, the staff of nine have been forced to collectively bring 100 litres of water with them to work every day.

Makhan appealed to the community at large to help pay off Umhlali Post Office’s outstanding water account with the hope of having running water supply restored.
