The Gallery bids farewell to curator Jane Digby

The latest exhibition at The Gallery in Ballito Lifestyle Centre also represents a changing of the creative guard.

A co-curation, the ‘Impression/Expression’ exhibit was the last of former Gallery curator, Jane Digby, and the first of her replacement, Sarah O’Reilly.

Digby has led The Gallery since its inception, growing a dedicated following while placing a spotlight on predominantly KwaZulu-Natal based artists.

“It has been three incredible years, but I always knew that it was not going to be a forever thing. It has grown to the point that the Lifestyle Centre is taking it over from me and I am excited to get back into my studio full time,” said Digby.

“I am an artist first, after all. I want to paint, I want to create and this felt like the right time to leave. Sarah already had links to The Gallery and was the perfect fit to take over.”

O’Reilly was previously the Head of Art at Ashton International College Ballito and is well-known in the local artistic community.

“I had spent a lot of time here over the last few years. My mom has exhibited her work and Jane did many demonstrations for us at Ashton, so the relationship already existed,” said O’Reilly.

The Gallery is the North Coast’s biggest and runs a new exhibition every two months, hosting local favourites and well-known artists from across South Africa.

‘Impression/Expression’ was launched last Thursday in conjunction with the centre’s First Thursdays series of events. Aside from the incredible art on show, Dylan Smith of ‘Painting on Purpose’ also hosted an interactive graffiti wall where people could make their own mark on Ballito’s creative scene.

The exhibition will run for the next two months and can be found in the Studios at Lifestyle Centre and is open from 9am-5pm daily.
