Ballito crime spike raises concern
Stressing the importance of increased vigilance, Morné Steffens highlighted the recent release of known perpetrators from jail.
Ballito has seen a rise in criminal incidents over the past month, causing unease among residents.
The incidents involve attempted break-ins, thefts and a case of copper pipes stolen.
The most recent attempted break-in occurred on Compensation Beach Road in the early hours last Monday.
Prior to that, Fidelity/ADT reported that on Saturday, October 28, a man was caught on camera descending a ladder from the roof of the Fidelity/ADT office on Ballito Drive.
The suspect managed to escape, leaving behind a black refuse bag filled with stolen copper pipes.
Ballito Neighbourhood Watch chair, Morné Steffens, said there had been a number of attempted break-ins in Zen Drive and positive break-ins in Minerva Road North.
Stressing the importance of increased vigilance, Steffens highlighted the recent release of known perpetrators from jail.
“These increases in crime locally often coincide with the release of individuals who quickly return to a life of crime,” he said.
Steffens urged residents to not neglect security measures installed in their homes for their safety.
“Instances of doors left unlocked and alarms not activated have been common.”
He also appealed for increased community involvement in patrols.
“Residents are urged to dedicate just two hours per week to serve as the eyes and ears of the community, fostering collaboration with local security companies and the police,” said Steffens.
