Feeding the hungry in La Mercy
Project CommUNITY launched in September and offered work to 80 unemployed residents to clean and green La Mercy and Tongaat.
Five-hundred meals were recently delivered to residents of the Lungelani and Pholani informal settlements as part of the annual weFEEDsa programme.
The weFEEDsa organisation supports communities around KwaZulu-Natal, including in La Mercy and Tongaat, with Team SIATA and Tongaat Child Welfare the local implementing groups.
Every year they donate meals for the needy and 500 burgers and cooldrinks were recently delivered in La Mercy for residents of the surrounding informal settlements.
Participants in the ongoing Project CommUNITY programme, also affiliated to weFEEDsa, identified the recipients, mostly children, and cooked the food on site.

“It was a fantastic day and everyone really enjoyed the opportunity to give back,” said Team SIATA founder, Ibrahim Sharif.
“Project CommUNITY has been very successful to date and around 30km of beach has been cleaned. Two participants have just got their chainsaw license and will help to cut back bush too.”
