New man in charge of Mandeni Saps

Lieutenant-Colonel Vinay Rabichand will draw on his 33 years of big city experience to stamp out crime in Mandeni.

Rabichand is the new station commander at Mandeni’s Saps and the main force against crime in iLembe’s northern reaches.

Since graduating from police college in 1989, Rabichand has been deployed at major stations across the country.

He began at Lenasia near Johannesburg as a constable in the community service centre and crime prevention unit, before being transferred to Protea North in Soweto.

Rabichand would become an inspector in 1999 and was later transferred to Orlando Police station, also in Soweto, when promoted to captain in 2006.

He became head of the Visible Policing unit, which placed him in charge of detectives and crime prevention.

Mandeni would be his next destination in 2014, and a later promotion to Lieutenant-Colonel followed.

Rabichand, who is described as accessible by his colleagues, was seen as the natural choice for the station commander role after earning the community’s trust and support over the last nine years.

His early focus will be on tackling the prevalence of rural stock theft and the destruction of infrastructure for selling scrap metal.
