Argentina trip on the menu for four North Coast hockey boys

One of the mothers put together a fabulous cookbook to help raise funds.

Four North Coast hockey boys have cracked the nod to represent the Northwood U16 and first teams in Argentina in March.

But they need their North Coast community’s help to get there.

With Northwood hockey currently ranked fourth in South Africa, identical twins Ryan and Blake Herselman from Umdloti and brothers Ben and Guy Henwood-Fox from Ballito are extremely honoured to be included.

The Herselman boys and Ben are in the U16 team while Guy will run on for the first team.

However, making the teams was only the first step. Now comes the difficult part: fundraising.

With a hefty price tag of R50 000 per child and the Herselman and Henwood-Fox families each having two children to finance, they have their work cut out for them.

With a background in journalism and having successfully authored two books, the twins’ mother, Christy, decided to put together a fabulous cookbook to help foot the bill.

The Knights Around the Table cookbook will hit the shelves in the first week of December, just in time for Christmas shopping.

Titled Knights Around the Table, the 96-page full-colour cookbook features a collection of delicious recipes, anecdotes and photographs from the extended Northwood family of coaches, staff and local businesses.

Packed with classics such as Tannie Jill’s pancakes, Coach Doug’s chilli, Mayfair’s secret salad dressing and Ma Baker’s chicken chutney, the book promises to be a family favourite.

“It is a perfect Christmas gift, and we hope people love reading and using this book as much as we loved putting it together,” said Christy.

It will be available from this Friday at Nikki’s The Gift Shop, Belvista Centre, Scoop at Lifestyle Centre and at Umhlali Preparatory for only R250.

“Because we managed to find a sponsor for every page of the book, 100% of the proceeds will go towards the hockey tour,” said Christy.

She will also host a Christmas wreath making evening on December 8 and a Sip & Thrift evening next year on February 23 to make sure she reaches the R100 000 target for her boys to go on tour.

This will be the school’s first international hockey tour after four long years since the last pre-Covid-19 tour in 2019.

To further assist with costs, the hockey teams are also putting together a professional tour magazine containing pictures of the boys, a few articles and player profiles along with a letter from the principal, Mr Viljoen.

Anyone who would like to book an advert or place a message of goodwill can email Christy (info@thechat.co.za) or Ben and Guy’s mother, Keryn (Khf.henwoodfox@icloud.com) and the proceeds of those sales would be deducted against the Herselman and Henwood-Fox boys’ tour accounts.
