La Mercy lights up with vibrant celebration of Holi Festival

La Mercy residents brighten the Holi Festival with customary colour throwing.

More than 700 people added some colour to La Mercy on Sunday in celebration of the annual Holi festival.

Hosted at the La Mercy Community Hall, the celebration drew widespread support from the surrounding Hindu communities.

After enjoying some entertainment provided by the Vishwa Shakti cultural group, crowds were able to brighten the night with the customary colour throwing.

“Holi is ultimately the celebration of good over evil and we believe it to have been around in some form for thousands of years,” said Vishwa Shakti founder, Pandit Kamal Maharaj.

“It first emerged when an evil person was vanquished and the community was so thankful that they began dancing with colours. That is what we continue to do to this day, celebrating the light.”
