Trio conquers open water swim off Ballito in honour of late skipper

Although not the longest swim they have undertaken, it was one that was close to their hearts.

Local swimming trio Mike Oberholzer, José de Charmoy and Andrew Stevens did not allow age to prevent them from completing a 5,2km swim from Clarke Bay to Salt Rock in memory of their late friend, Rob Heenan.

Having hit their 70s, they swam against strong currents and completed the challenge in 2hrs 40min.

Although not the longest swim they have undertaken, it was close to their hearts and a time to reminisce about the “old days”.

José de Charmoy, Mike Oberholzer and Andrew Stevens stop for a drink while enjoying the view of Ballito.

“This was our last swim together in memory of a very good friend and skipper who kept us safe in the water,” said Oberholzer.

Some previous ocean swims the trio have completed include the 12km from Tinley Manor to Clarke Bay, 17km from Sardinia to Corsica, and the longest one, 20km from Perth to Rottnest Island off Australia.
