Free rides and food parcels: E-hailing drivers support Tornado-stricken communities

While many of the drivers have also been affected, they say they cannot drive past their neighbours and customers in need.

E-hailing drivers in Tongaat have rallied to help those affected by the recent tornado.

From offering free car rides to people who require medical assistance, to buying school uniforms and giving out food parcels, they are determined to help their communities move forward.

E-hailing driver Vusi Ngcobo said he saw the devastation caused by the tornado in Magwaveni and knew he had to help. He then reached out to other e-hailing drivers.

“My home was destroyed but when I picked up a client in Magwaveni, I realised that what I was going through was nothing compared to what other people were going through,” said Ngcobo.

The beginning of new term two saw many of those affected by the tornado returning to school in civvies, because their school uniforms had been lost in the destruction. And so they pitched in to help, one child at a time.

They handed out sandwiches and fruit to school pupils every morning and clubbed together to buy school uniforms for a number of pupils from different schools.

“When we see a pupil without a school jersey, shoes, or proper school bag, we try to help them. After all, it’s these very people who give us business and support our livelihoods,” he said.
