iLembe Chamber 2024 entrepreneur competition launches, celebrating a decade of nurturing small businesses
Participants will gain critical business skills through a UKZN-accredited curriculum and mentorship from industry experts.
The 2024 iLembe Chamber entrepreneur competition kicked off on Saturday, marking the start of another journey to discover and nurture entrepreneurial talent within the district.
For the past decade, this programme has been a proven catalyst for the success of local small businesses, providing them with essential tools and support to thrive.
The initial session introduced participants to the programme, its mentors and trainers.
It offers a platform for entrepreneurs and owners of micro, small, and medium enterprises to elevate their businesses to sustainable levels.
With a curriculum accredited by UKZN and the guidance of Chamber-accredited mentors, finalists gain critical skills and knowledge through workshops, business mentoring, and the development of comprehensive business plans, corporate identities, and marketing knowledge.
iLembe Chamber CEO, Cobus Oelofse, highlighted that the 14th edition of the programme attracted a record-equalling number of entries, making the selection of finalists particularly challenging.
He expressed pride in the diverse representation from all four local municipalities in the class of 2024.
This year’s programme also welcomes new partners and mentors who will support the selected small businesses with valuable guidance and resources.
Over the years, 278 community-based businesses have participated, reporting an impressive 50% growth in revenue.
Additionally, 261 new jobs have been created in the local economy by finalists, with an average cost of R2 520 per job retained or created.
Finalists have benefitted from 13 500 tuition man-hours and 4 000 mentoring man-hours.
The Entrepreneur Programme continuously evolves based on valuable feedback from finalists and stakeholders.
Twenty-five SMMEs have been selected to participate this year.
The programme is also expanding its national presence. With the support of ACSA, the iLembe Chamber will collaborate with the George Business Chamber and the Mangaung Chamber of Commerce to establish similar initiatives in those areas.
After a seven-week programme, an entrepreneur exhibition by the finalists will be held on October 25.
