Inter-city partnership brings vital aid to tornado-stricken Magwaveni community

Volunteers from Nedbank, alongside the Humanitarian Empowerment Fund and Legends Barber, joined forces to offer food parcels and rebuilding assistance to the hardest-hit residents of Magwaveni.

An inter-city partnership saw aid delivered to the still struggling community of Magwaveni near Tongaat last week.

Representatives of the Humanitarian Empowerment Fund (HEF), Nedbank and Legends Barber from Johannesburg joined those from Haven of Rest in Tongaat to hand out food parcels and offer some rebuilding assistance.

The Magwaveni area was among the worst hit during the Tongaat tornado and many residents are still in the process of trying to get back their homes.

Magwaveni residents were thrilled to receive the donations.

“Haven of Rest identified the households that were most in need, including those with the elderly, disabled and single mothers,” said HEF co-founder, Clete Stevis.

“Over three days we will be giving help wherever we can, with food staples and by repairing roofs. We are also planting a vegetable garden at Haven of Rest.”

The assistance was made possible through a partnership with the Nedbank Foundation, who also provided volunteers to help over the three days.

“As a purpose-led organisation, we try and collaborate with partners wherever we can to make a difference,” said Nedbank Foundation portfolio manager, Tshepo Mdwaba.

Sheldon Tatchell gets a low five from a young Magwaveni resident.

“And it’s not just about funding, we think it is important to be on the ground too, trying to live by that spirit of ubuntu.”

The first day of outreach last Wednesday ended with a visit from Legends Barber founder, Sheldon Tatchell, whose Ballito franchise staff gave 100 haircuts to kids in the area.
