Ballito construction workers killed in hit-and-run while hitchhiking
Funds needed to repatriate the bodies of the victims.
Two Mozambican nationals were killed in a hit-and-run accident while hitchhiking on the N2, near the Umvoti Toll Plaza last week.
The victims, Paul Maduma and Alex (surname unknown), were residents of Tembeni twonship (next to the toll plaza) who were employed as construction workers in Ballito.
The men had reportedly not had enough money for taxi fare and decided to hitchhike to Ballito on Thursday morning.
According to Paul’s friend, Jota Ezap, the two men were hit by a Toyota Fortuner with no license plate.
Ezap said that hitchhiking was a common practice for them when they didn’t have the money for a taxi.
He said they also did not have enough money to transport their friends’ bodies back home for burial.
“We need at least R30,000 per person, and we don’t have that money. We are out of options and are appealing to anyone who can help us give our brothers a proper send-off,” Ezap pleaded.
