450 Smiles: Orphan Fund birthday party goes to the children

The North Coast Courier Orphan Fund celebrates 21 years of giving.

More than 450 local children benefitted from The North Coast Courier Orphan Fund’s birthday celebration bonanza.

Marking the NGO’s 21 years of serving the community in the iLembe district, the fund roped in Siyakhula Creche in Groutville, Siyakhula Creche in Shaka’s Head, Phillips HIV/AIDS Ministry and Outreach in Shakaville, and Safe Haven in Ntshawini to help celebrate the milestone.

“Our children are the heart of our organisation, so it was fitting that we took the celebration to them,” said Orphan Fund fundraising coordinator Charmaine Premlal.

“Thank you to our generous sponsors Ohana Umhlali, Waltons Ballito, Boxer Superstores and Chateau Gateaux, who showered the children in gifts, food and fun; making it a day they will not soon forget.”

The NGOs also received grocery items to feed their charges over the next few weeks.

The Orphan Fund was established in 2003 by Courier co-founder Rose Stephenson with the purpose of channelling money raised from the public to non-governmental organisations that specialise in caring for orphans and vulnerable children. The fund has been making a difference to the poorest of the poor, mostly those who have been affected by HIV/Aids-related deaths of breadwinners in their families and natural disasters such as floods and unrest in KZN.

Funds are generated through fundraising events, donations from businesses and individuals and various reward programmes. To date, the Orphan Fund has raised and distributed more than
R8-million. It is independently audited to ensure transparency.

Premlal said that the organisation has continued to grow year on year, and they look forward to the future with renewed energy and vision.

“Reaching a milestone like a 21st birthday is a big deal for any organisation. The NCC Orphan Fund has not only survived but thrived, adapted, and grown through various challenges. We take this opportunity to reflect on our achievements, and to thank all the sponsors, donors, supporters, volunteers and staff who make it possible,” she said.
