Man killed as car drives off bridge in Tongaat

It is unclear what caused the motorist to lose control of his car.

A 31-year-old man died when his out-of-control car plunged off the Maidstone bridge on the R102 this afternoon and landed on its roof on the river bank below.

According to reports, the man was travelling south when his light motor vehicle veered off the road and crashed through the bridge railing. There were no other passengers in the car.

“At this stage, it’s unclear what caused the driver to lose control as no witnesses have come forward,” said IPSS Medical Rescue’s Kelsey-Jae Meyrick.
