Ballito teens critically injured in Portugal car accident
Community rallies to raise funds for former Curro Salt Rock pupils Hané van der Merwe and Miguel Nicholson after tragic crash during gap year holiday.
The Ballito community is rallying to support the families of two Curro Salt Rock matriculants who are in critical condition following a car accident in Portugal.
Nineteen-year-old former Miss Ballito finalist, Hané van der Merwe, and her boyfriend Miguel Nicholson (19) were on a two-month holiday in Portugal during their gap year.
The accident occured while the young couple were on their way to Porto. They are being treated in the Santa Maria Hospital in Lisbon.
Hané has suffered multiple serious injuries and remains on a ventilator in a medically induced coma. She may also require surgery for a severe back injury.
Annelize van Zyl, a friend from Blythedale, and her daughter Lindi have launched a BackaBuddy campaign to raise funds to assist Hané’s parents to travel to Portugal.
They have applied for emergency visas, and Mozambik Ballito has generously offered to cover the cost of their return flight tickets.
“We set a target of R250 000 and have already surpassed R150 000, which is very encouraging. We are grateful for all the support we have received.
“The money raised will help Hané’s parents afford accommodation, car rental and any unforeseen medical expenses. We expect they may need more than this, but we are grateful they can be with their daughter as soon as the visas are issued,” said Van Zyl.
A South African community in Portugal has also offered various forms of support to both Hané and Miguel’s family.
The organiser of Miss Ballito, Heidie Smith, expressed the deep sorrow felt by the Miss Ballito family following the tragic car accident.
“As you both fight for your lives, Hané and Miguel, please know that our thoughts, prayers and love are with you. Hané, your strength, resilience, and inner and outer beauty have touched many lives during your Miss Ballito journey. We remember your radiant smile, infectious energy and unwavering dedication to making a difference. We are sending waves of hope and healing to you both,” said Smith.
