Emerging contractors poised to contribute to construction sector
iLembe programme stimulates economic growth and job creation.
The iLembe Emerging Contractors Programme recently concluded with a celebratory ceremony that recognised the achievements of small and medium-sized businesses in the construction sector.
This comprehensive seven-month programme is designed to nurture and empower emerging contractors by enhancing their business skills and knowledge in the built environment.
The eight participants received certificates acknowledging their growth and the new skills they acquired. The ceremony also featured presentations from the South African Revenue Service on business compliance and ABSA Bank on financial products for contractors.
Mentorship from industry specialists, monthly workshops and a one-year membership with Master Builders KwaZulu-Natal provided valuable resources and networking opportunities.
The marketing exposure gained during the programme has led to increased enquiries about their services, boosting the visibility of these emerging contractors.
Additionally, participants received a year’s licence for HSEC Online for managing health and safety compliance, as well as a National Certificate in Construction Contracting to boost their market competitiveness.

One of the participants, Nozipho Manqele (Ntandooh Pty Ltd) from Shaka’s Head, entered the construction industry with little knowledge of business management. Thanks to the programme, she has learned how to manage finances and has a better understanding of how to price her work.
“I cannot fully express my gratitude for this opportunity. It was an eye-opener and provided us with skills that will support us throughout our business journey. I hope more programmes like this continue to help small business owners,” said Manqele.
The programme not only supports local businesses but also fosters economic growth within the construction sector. Armed with the knowledge and skills gained, these emerging contractors are now better prepared to make significant contributions to the industry, create jobs and strengthen their communities.
This initiative is a collaborative effort between Avon Peaking Power, ENGIE Peakers Operations and Siza Water, with Master Builders KZN overseeing its presentation.
Participants were nominated for inclusion in the programme by Siza Water, the Slev Group, Balwin Properties and North Point Ballito.
