Olympian Hamish Lovemore cruises to KZN Sportsman of the Year title
Apart from his Olympic debut, he also recorded a hat-trick of victories at the South African Canoe Marathon Championships in June.
Umdloti paddler Hamish Lovemore was named KwaZulu-Natal’s Sportsman of the Year at a glamorous ceremony at the weekend.
The 25-year-old was chosen ahead of fellow finalists, rugby player Aphelele Fassi and cricketer Keshav Maharaj, and won a new car along with the national recognition that the award brings.
Hamish made his debut as an Olympian in July, finishing 9th in the men’s Kayak Single 1 000m and 11th in the men’s Kayak Double 500m with paddling partner Andy Birkett.

He also swept a hat-trick of victories at the South African Canoe Marathon Championships in June, claiming gold in the men’s K1 short and long course and the K2 race with Birkett.
“Sho, my heart is pounding!” said Hamish after accepting the award at Durban’s International Convention Centre on Saturday.
“I just want to say thank you to Canoeing South Africa, my family and my sponsors, Eurosteel. This is really awesome.”
Hamish was joined by Protea women bowler Nonkululeko Mlaba who took the title of Sportswoman of the Year. They both took home a new VW Polo sponsored by Joma Sport.
