The bakkie driver, a 31-year-old man, suffered fatal injuries.

A head-on collision between a truck and a car on the N2 near Salt Rock early this morning left one person dead and caused the closure of the northbound lanes of the highway.

According to IPSS Medical Rescue’s Samantha Meyrick, a truck collided head-on with a bakkie that was allegedly travelling northbound in the southbound lane, contraflow. The truck ended up in the northbound lane.

The driver of the bakkie, a 31-year-old man suffered fatal injuries and was declared dead at the scene. The truck driver was not injured.

Meyrick said while emergency services were attending to the scene, a secondary accident occurred when a car struck a tow truck assisting at the accident scene. No injuries were reported in this incident.

This article was amended after it was published. It was originally reported that the truck, travelling on the southbound lane, lost control and crossed into the oncoming lane, crashing into a light motor vehicle.
